On Sunday, January 12th, 2025, at 2:00 PM, Dr. Christopher Haveman will deliver a presentation focused on the forced removal of the Creek Indians. This event will take place at the Florence Indian Mound Museum, located at 1028 South Court Street in Florence, Alabama. While many individuals are familiar with the Cherokee’s harrowing “Trail of Tears,” fewer recognize that from 1827 to 1849, approximately 23,000 Creek Indians were similarly displaced from their homes in Alabama and Georgia, ultimately being relocated to Indian territory situated west of the Mississippi River.
Dr. Haveman’s presentation will delve into the arduous journeys faced by the Creek people as they traversed harsh desert roads and icy rivers en route to what is now Oklahoma. The discussion will also shed light on the role of federal agents in the relocation process, including the removal of those who sought refuge among the Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Seminole Nations.
The Florence Indian Mound Museum operates from Tuesday to Saturday, welcoming visitors from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and on Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. For additional details regarding the event, interested individuals can reach out to the museum at 256-760-6427. This informative session is made possible through the sponsorship of the Alabama Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association, in collaboration with the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums, and it is offered free of charge to the public.
