AAA Anticipates Record-Breaking Holiday Travel This Year

According to projections from AAA, an estimated 122.4 million Americans are expected to embark on journeys of at least 50 miles from their homes during the holiday season, spanning from December 20 to January 1. This figure marks a 2.2% increase compared to the previous year and sets a new record for holiday travel in the United States. Among those travelers, over 2.8 million residents from Tennessee are anticipated to take to the roads, skies, and railways.

The majority of these travelers will opt for driving as their primary mode of transportation. AAA forecasts that approximately 109.5 million individuals will travel by car, benefiting from lower gas prices compared to the same period last year. In light of this, AAA advises motorists to ensure their vehicles are well-prepared for the journey ahead. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of designating a sober driver and adhering to Tennessee’s “Slow Down, Move Over” law, which is designed to safeguard roadside responders and those who may find themselves stranded.

Air travel is also expected to see a significant uptick, with holiday air travel projected to exceed 8 million passengers nationwide for the first time. Domestic flight prices are averaging nearly $900, reflecting a 7% increase from last year. To navigate the busy airports effectively, AAA recommends that travelers arrive well in advance, keep an eye on their flight statuses, and pack essential items in their carry-on luggage.

When it comes to popular destinations during this festive season, many travelers are gravitating towards warmer climates. Cities such as Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami are leading the list of domestic favorites, while international travelers are favoring locations like Cancun and Punta Cana.

To help mitigate the impact of heavy traffic, AAA suggests that travelers consider departing after 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, or before 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 21. Historically, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day tend to experience lighter traffic congestion; however, it is important to remain vigilant as winter weather can quickly alter driving conditions.
