As Independence Day draws near, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is intensifying its efforts to promote safe travel throughout the state’s highways and waterways. This year’s initiative, titled “Standards and Success,” underscores the significance of individual accountability when it comes to safety.
In support of this campaign, ALEA will deploy all available troopers to patrol during the holiday weekend, with a dual focus on enforcement and public education. The agency is emphasizing four critical safety standards that all travelers should adhere to. First and foremost, it is essential to always wear a seat belt, regardless of how short the journey may be. Additionally, drivers are urged to eliminate distractions by refraining from using their phones while behind the wheel. Observing speed limits is another vital practice that can significantly decrease both the likelihood and severity of accidents. Lastly, it is crucial to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or while feeling fatigued.
The overarching aim of ALEA is to prevent injuries and save lives by promoting responsible behavior and ensuring that reckless drivers and boaters are held accountable for their actions. Beyond roadway safety, ALEA is also increasing its presence on lakes, rivers, and coastal waters, where boating activity tends to spike during the holiday. In alignment with a national initiative known as Operation Dry Water, ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division will be actively searching for impaired boat operators, taking necessary measures to remove them from the water to avert potential accidents.
Furthermore, ALEA is placing a strong emphasis on the safety of swimmers and beachgoers. For the fourth consecutive year, the agency will implement a Rescue Swimmer Detail along the Gulf Coast in collaboration with the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Fire Departments. A helicopter will be deployed to patrol the shoreline, enabling rapid response to swimmers in distress and monitoring areas that lack lifeguard coverage.
Given the unpredictable weather that often accompanies the summer months, ALEA is advising both residents and visitors to check weather forecasts prior to outdoor activities. Sudden storms can lead to perilous conditions, particularly on the water. Beachgoers are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with the meanings of beach warning flags to steer clear of dangerous surf conditions.
As families and friends come together to celebrate the Fourth of July, ALEA is urging everyone to prioritize safety, ensuring that the holiday weekend concludes with all individuals returning home safely.
