Starting this weekend, law enforcement officers in Alabama will begin enforcing new regulations on distracted driving. The Alabama Department of Transportation has outlined specific behaviors that will now result in citations. These include crossing in and out of traffic lanes without signaling, swerving, or displaying impaired driving while engaging in various activities.
Under the new law, individuals will be in violation if they are physically holding or supporting a wireless telecommunications device or stand-alone electronic device. This encompasses actions such as writing, sending, or reading text-based communications on a wireless device, watching videos or movies, recording or broadcasting videos, and using multiple buttons or swipes to initiate or end a voice call.
Additionally, reaching for a device in a way that causes the driver to no longer be properly seated and restrained by a safety belt is also prohibited.
