On January 13th, the University of North Alabama marked a significant milestone by celebrating 195 years of academic achievement during its annual Founders’ Day festivities. Established in 1830 on the grounds of LaGrange College in Colbert County, UNA holds the distinction of being the oldest four-year public institution of higher learning in the state of Alabama. This year’s celebration took place at the Guillot University Center and highlighted two additional noteworthy anniversaries: the UNA Marching Band’s impressive 75 years and the 50th anniversary of its social work academic program. Both of these programs have played an integral role in the university’s commitment to excellence in the fields of arts, education, and community service.
In a show of school spirit, the university encouraged both the local community and campus members to don their favorite purple attire in honor of Purple Pride Day. Attendees at the Founders’ Day event were treated to refreshments and had the opportunity to create a personalized keepsake through a “Build-a-Lion” activity, adding a unique touch to the celebration.
Furthermore, Founders’ Day serves as a platform for the University of North Alabama to promote its Shine On, Gold comprehensive campaign, which invites support for the institution. Contributions to the 1830 Fund, in collaboration with President Kitts and his leadership team, are designed to address the university’s most urgent needs and aspirations. The ongoing support from alumni and friends is vital to ensuring the continued success and growth of UNA.
