Mrs. Clara Simmons Harwell, age 90, passed away on January 9, 2025, at NHC in Pulaski, TN. She was born on January 15, 1934, in Lynnville, Tennessee, to the late Mack and Nellie Buford Simmons. Clara was a devoted wife, mother, and active member of her community and church.
Clara’s early education began at Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, where she also accepted Christ at an early age. On August 9, 1952, she married Alex Harwell Sr., and together they had three children. Clara worked as a nurse at the old hospital and later with Dr. W.K. Owen. She then worked at Maremont Gabriel, where she retired after many years of service.
She was a dedicated member of the Order of Eastern Star (OES) Chosen Friends Chapter Number 87 for over 47 years, serving in various capacities. Clara was also very active in Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church, supporting the Young People’s Department and participating in various church activities.
Clara is survived by her loving husband, Alex Harwell Sr.; daughter, Clarie Givens; son, Barry Earl Harwell and wife, Netra; grandchildren, Alex (Christina) Harwell III, Ronald Givens, Thomas Harwell, Amber Givens, and Rebekah Harwell; seven great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A public viewing will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Jordan Funeral Home, with the funeral service taking place on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Campbell Chapel AME Church. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Pulaski, TN. Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Clara Simmons Harwell.
