A sheriff’s deputy in Colbert County is receiving accolades for his rapid response in rescuing a motorist trapped in floodwaters on Tuesday morning. The incident unfolded around 10:46 a.m. on September 2, in the 8000 block of 6th Street in Leighton, as reported by the Colbert County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Briggs Wright was dispatched to the scene of a crash that fortunately resulted in no injuries. Upon his arrival, he discovered an SUV submerged approximately 15 feet off the road in a flooded field.
Hearing desperate screams emanating from the vehicle, Deputy Wright quickly assessed the situation and spotted a female driver trapped in the back seat as the water continued to rise around her. Without hesitation, he removed his duty belt and waded into the water. He opened the rear passenger door and successfully guided the driver out of the SUV and back to safety on the roadway.
Once they were out of the floodwaters, Deputy Wright ensured the driver was comfortable by placing her inside his patrol vehicle. He provided her with his rain jacket, turned on the heat to help warm her up, and offered her water while they awaited the arrival of her parents. The driver later expressed her heartfelt gratitude for Deputy Wright’s prompt and effective actions. In recognition of his bravery and commitment to the safety of the community, the Sheriff’s Department issued a statement praising Deputy Wright for his exemplary service.
