On October 5th, Officer Wiser from the Columbia Police Department responded to a distress call concerning a woman in a state of crisis. The situation involved a female individual who had reportedly engaged in self-harm and had isolated herself in a bedroom. It was noted that she had a history of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and expressed a fear of law enforcement, which added complexity to the situation.
Despite these challenges, Officer Wiser managed to establish communication with the woman through the closed door of the bedroom. By fostering a rapport, Officer Wiser was able to encourage the woman to emerge from her confinement. Ultimately, the woman agreed to be transported to a hospital for further evaluation and support. Thanks to Officer Wiser’s adept handling of the situation and the effective application of her training, the incident concluded without any injuries and did not necessitate additional resources.
In recognition of her exemplary service, Officer Wiser was honored with the title of Officer of the Month in October 2024. Her commitment to her duties and her ability to navigate a delicate situation with compassion and skill is commendable. Well done, Officer Wiser!
