Columbia Secures Grant for Waste Reduction Initiatives

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), through its Division of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) and Materials Management Program (MMP), has awarded a Waste Reduction Grant to the City of Columbia. This grant, valued at $425,200, represents a significant investment in the city’s sustainability initiatives, with the City of Columbia contributing a 30% match. The funding will primarily be utilized for the acquisition of a new recycling truck, which is expected to bolster the city’s waste management capabilities.

This initiative underscores Columbia’s commitment to enhancing public services while promoting responsible environmental stewardship. The addition of the new recycling truck is a pivotal move towards achieving the city’s broader objective of fostering a more sustainable community. It will play a vital role in increasing the volume of materials that can be recycled, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the city’s waste management system.

Public Works Director Jeff DeWire expressed enthusiasm about the new vehicle, stating that it will significantly improve the city’s service delivery. He noted that the truck will facilitate more efficient collection routes, lower operational costs, and ultimately provide a more dependable and expanded recycling service for all residents. The anticipated delivery date for the new truck is set for June 30, 2025, and the city is eager to see the grant contract finalized promptly.

In its continuous pursuit of a cleaner and greener future for its residents, the City of Columbia looks forward to integrating this new recycling truck into its fleet, further enhancing its environmental initiatives.
