The Lawrence County Commission is scheduled to convene on Tuesday, September 23, at 5 p.m. in Courtroom A of the Lawrence County Courthouse. The agenda for this meeting is packed with a variety of topics, including support for local schools, public safety initiatives, economic development efforts, and animal welfare concerns. Among the most notable items on the agenda is a proposal seeking $800,000 to assist in the construction of a multi-purpose building featuring a gym floor at Lawrence County High School. Officials have indicated that the decision regarding this funding is being postponed to allow for a comprehensive evaluation of similar needs throughout the county.
This discussion comes on the heels of the county’s recent discovery of an additional $1.5 million in its general fund, following year-end financial closeouts. Another significant financial matter to be addressed is a proposed transfer of $161,000 to the Economic Development Corporation of Lawrence County. This funding, when combined with a state grant, is earmarked for the acquisition of property located at Hagan Road and Highway 43, which is essential for facilitating utility expansion related to a new 151-acre industrial site. Additionally, the commissioners are expected to reaffirm a 2018 agreement that commits $100,000 annually to support such economic development projects.
On the nonprofit side, the commission will deliberate on the restoration of $10,000 in funding for the Friends of Lawrence County Animals’ spay/neuter initiative, known as SNIPS! Proponents of this program argue that the funding would enable approximately 135 pets to receive necessary surgeries, thereby addressing the issue of overpopulation in the county.
In terms of educational matters, the agenda includes a request for $7,100 to assist high school students in attending the state SkillsUSA competitions. Furthermore, the commission will recognize Summertown High School student Cavan Love for his outstanding achievements in welding competitions. Safety concerns will also be addressed, as commissioners will consider a resolution to install gates on West College Street in front of Summertown High School, effectively closing this section during school hours to enhance student safety.
Other items on the agenda include a proposal to introduce a $12.50 fee to all criminal court costs, aimed at providing additional funding for the District Attorney’s office. The meeting will also feature annual elections for Commission officers and the reappointment of Brandi Williams as Director of Accounts & Budgets, along with Charlie Holt as County Attorney. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which will begin with a designated time for citizen comments.
