In a tragic incident that unfolded on Saturday night, a two-vehicle crash in Decatur has led to the death of a 17-year-old girl and the subsequent arrest of a man on murder charges. The Decatur Police Department, along with Decatur Fire and Rescue, responded to reports of a collision that resulted in injuries around 9:02 PM on May 17th. The scene of the accident was located near the intersection of Beltline Road SW and Westmead Street SW.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found one of the vehicles fully engulfed in flames. Despite the efforts of several bystanders who attempted to assist the young victim before emergency services could arrive, the situation turned dire. Tragically, the young girl was pronounced dead at the scene. In a heartbreaking turn of events, one of the good Samaritans who rushed to help was severely injured when the vehicle exploded during their rescue efforts. The injuries sustained were so critical that the individual was subsequently transported to UAB Hospital for urgent medical care.
Following the incident, Decatur Police announced on Monday that Kevin Jay Penich had been arrested and charged with murder and driving under the influence (DUI) in connection with the crash. Penich has since posted a bond set at $250,000 and is currently being held at the Morgan County Jail. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event continues as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
