Donald Reid Smith, Sr., 88, passed away on January 3, 2025, at Helen Keller Hospital. He was a dedicated member of the community, having served as a deacon at Lexington First Baptist Church and as a former member of the Lexington Fire & Rescue Squad. Donald was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy and had a successful career at Reynolds Alloy before retiring.
He is survived by his sons, Jerry Smith and Ronny Smith (Beth), and his daughters, Connie Pilgrim and Tawna Evans (Joe). Donald is also survived by his brothers, Arnold Smith and Harold Smith, as well as a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Shelton Smith, his parents, Herbert E. Smith and Mamie Leo Patterson Smith, his son, Donny Smith, his son-in-law, Tommy Pilgrim, and his sister, Willese McConnell.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, from 11:00am – 1:00pm, at Lexington First Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 1:00pm, officiated by Jeff Cruse. Donald will be laid to rest at Mitchell Cemetery with military honors at the graveside.
The pallbearers will be Chasley Smith, Casey Pulliam, Paden Smith, Heath Minor, Alex Gasque, and Trey Kennemer. Greenhill Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements. Donald will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
