The Department of Arts and Museums in Florence is set to present a screening of the documentary titled “Echoes of the Forks of Cypress,” directed by Frederick Murphy. This event will take place on Thursday, October 9, starting at 6:30 p.m. The venue for this screening is the Southall Building, located at 209 E. Tuscaloosa Street in Florence.
This 45-minute documentary, made possible through funding from the Alabama Humanities Alliance as part of its “Healing History” initiative, delves into the complex narratives surrounding the Forks of Cypress plantation in Florence, Alabama. It sheds light on the experiences of both the enslaved individuals and their enslavers, offering a poignant examination of their daily lives, challenges, and the resilience displayed by the enslaved community. The film also highlights the ongoing efforts by the descendants of both groups to engage with their shared history, aiming to transform the plantation and its cemetery into meaningful spaces for remembrance and contemplation.
