Florence Police Capture Armed Burglary Suspect Thanks to Community Tips

On the morning of Wednesday, May 28th, 2025, at approximately 8:50 AM, officers from the Florence Police Department responded to a report of an active burglary occurring in the 500 block of Larimore Street. Upon entering the residence, the suspect confronted the occupant while brandishing a firearm. The arrival of law enforcement prompted the suspect to flee the scene.

Following their initial investigation, officers were able to identify the suspect as 36-year-old Cory Gilchrist, a resident of Florence, Alabama, after interviewing the victim present at the location. It was revealed that Gilchrist had outstanding warrants issued by the Florence Police Department. Despite a thorough search of the surrounding area, officers were unable to locate him at that time.

Later that same day, around 1:30 PM, police received a tip indicating that Gilchrist was in the vicinity of the intersection of Mobile Street and Washington Street. Officers quickly responded to the location and, despite Gilchrist being armed, they managed to apprehend him without incident. He was subsequently charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree domestic violence, specifically menacing.

Currently, Gilchrist is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bond as he awaits a hearing in accordance with Aniah’s Law. The Florence Police Department expressed their gratitude to the community for their vigilance and for providing crucial information that aids in the resolution of ongoing investigations, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in maintaining safety within the city.
