Florence Police Foundation Collaborates with FPD to Launch Leadership Academy for At-Risk Youth

The Florence Alabama Police Foundation has collaborated with the Florence Police Department to host its annual Leadership Academy, designed specifically for participants in the Lauderdale County SPAN Program. This initiative aims to provide at-risk youth with a week filled with practical learning experiences, mentorship, and opportunities for personal growth.

The SPAN Program, which stands for Special Programming for Achievement Network, is a nonresidential and coeducational effort that assists troubled youth and their families throughout Alabama. By employing a blend of contemporary educational resources and established counseling methods, the program caters to students who have been referred by juvenile courts, educational institutions, and various agencies.

During the week-long academy, students had the opportunity to engage directly with officers from different specialized units within the Florence Police Department. The curriculum included a variety of educational sessions and activities, such as a class addressing the risks associated with sexting, an interactive DUI simulation, and a guided tour of the police department facilities.

Florence Police Chief Shane Holt conducted a leadership seminar that emphasized the importance of personal accountability and the ability to control one’s actions and mindset. This message was particularly aimed at empowering the students as they face various challenges in their lives.

To conclude the week, participants enjoyed a celebratory outing that included bowling and pizza, marking their achievements and personal development throughout the program. The Florence Alabama Police Foundation expressed its pride in supporting this initiative, highlighting its commitment to creating positive and impactful experiences for local youth through mentorship and community involvement.
