FOLCA Fundraiser Raises More Than $54,000 for New Animal Shelter Construction

Friends of Lawrence County Animals (FOLCA) achieved remarkable success during its annual fundraising event, An Evening with Friends, which took place on September 6 at Soulshine Farm in Lawrenceburg. The gathering attracted over 200 attendees who came together to celebrate advancements in local animal welfare while also raising substantial funds for the newly established Dr. Dan G. Jennings Intake and Quarantine Center at the Lawrence County–Lawrenceburg Animal Shelter.

The event raised an impressive total of more than $54,000, with $47,330 earmarked specifically for the new center. Additionally, $7,100 was allocated to the Pick a Paw – Change a Life campaign, which provides essential medical care and spay/neuter services for dogs in the shelter. In a heartwarming conclusion to the evening, Bill and Peggy Legg generously sponsored all remaining dogs on the board in tribute to Dr. Jennings, showcasing the community’s commitment to animal welfare.

FOLCA President Rosalind O’Steen Fort expressed her gratitude to community members, civic organizations, and local leaders for their unwavering support. She highlighted the significant impact of their efforts, noting that under the guidance of Shelter Director Ginger Morgan, over 225 dogs and puppies have found new homes or been transported to safety this year. Fort emphasized that the new facility will ensure a safer environment for animals entering the shelter system and will continue Dr. Jennings’ legacy of compassion.

The Jennings family was present at the event and received recognition for Dr. Jennings’ invaluable contributions to both animals and the community. Past President Leigh Ann Pettus took the opportunity to share recent achievements, including the successful fundraising of $27,000 for new play yards and equipment, the completion of more than 1,500 spay/neuter surgeries through the county’s SNIPS program, and the initiation of a youth education initiative that has reached over 650 students.

A significant founding gift from Betty and Jim Bush played a crucial role in launching the new intake and quarantine project, which aims to enhance the care provided to vulnerable animals arriving at the shelter.
