Gene Douglas Davidson

Gene Douglas Davidson, a beloved member of the Waynesboro community, passed away on Sunday, March 09, 2025, in Nashville, TN at the age of 88. He was a dedicated public servant, successful businessman, and a loving family man.

Born in 1936 to the late James Russ and Mae Tom Whitby Davidson, Gene graduated from Ole Miss and went on to own several businesses, including Davidson’s Drugs and Davidson’s Sod Farm. He also rebuilt and operated the Clifton Marina, where he formed lasting friendships and cherished the annual visits of boaters on the Tennessee River until he sold the marina in 2019.

Gene was deeply involved in politics, serving as the mayor of Waynesboro and as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives. He was also an active member of the Wayne County Democratic Party and served as chairman for several years. Gene was a passionate supporter of high school sports teams in Wayne County and a devoted fan of Ole Miss football and basketball.

Above all, Gene found his greatest joy in his family, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he supported wholeheartedly in all their endeavors.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Amy Sawyer-Walker (Cary) of Fairview, TN, and Jana Davidson of Brentwood, TN, as well as his son, Doug Davidson (Regina) of Bellevue, TN. He is also survived by his sisters, Sibyl Haggard of Waynesboro, TN, and Barbara Carman (Bud) of Franklin, TN, along with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Russ Davidson.

Visitation with the Davidson family will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Bates-Love Funeral and Cremation Chapel from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 11:00 AM until the service time at 1:00 PM at Philadelphia Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Philadelphia Baptist Church, with interment to follow in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be given to The Butterfly Foundation, The Janet J. Smith Foundation, or The Alzheimer’s Association.

Gene Douglas Davidson will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
