Governor Bill Lee Commemorates Hunting and Fishing Day as Archery Season Kicks Off

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is drawing attention to a significant proclamation from Governor Bill Lee, which acknowledges National Hunting and Fishing Day, scheduled for Saturday, September 27. This annual event aligns with the commencement of Tennessee’s fall archery season for both deer and turkey in designated counties. During the August Commission meeting, TWRA Executive Director Jason Maxedon formally presented the proclamation, emphasizing the vital role that license sales from hunters, anglers, and boaters play in funding wildlife conservation efforts, habitat acquisition, and recreational opportunities throughout the state.

The proclamation also highlights Tennessee’s rich heritage in hunting and fishing, a tradition that predates the state’s official establishment. National Hunting and Fishing Day, which was established by Congress in 1972, is celebrated each year on the fourth Saturday of September. In the previous year, Tennessee’s sportsmen and women made substantial contributions exceeding $78 million through the American System of Conservation Funding. This financial support came from over 910,000 hunters and anglers, who collectively spent an impressive $13 billion on outdoor activities.

As the day approaches, the TWRA encourages residents to familiarize themselves with the regulations and details outlined in the 2025–26 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide, which can be accessed at TNWildlife.org. This serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible outdoor practices and the ongoing commitment to preserving Tennessee’s natural resources for future generations.
