The Huntsville Police Department has issued a warning to residents regarding a fraudulent phone scam that has been making the rounds in the community. Numerous individuals have reported receiving calls from individuals falsely claiming to be affiliated with the police department. These scammers assert that the recipients have failed to appear for jury duty and that federal warrants have been issued against them. They then demand payments ranging from $1,500 to $10,000, typically insisting that these payments be made via Green Dot cards or Bitcoin.
Unfortunately, at least one individual has already fallen prey to this deceptive scheme. Authorities want to remind the public that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never contact you to demand money or request payment through unconventional means such as gift cards, Bitcoin, or wire transfers. If you happen to receive such a call, it is crucial to report it to your local law enforcement agency to help prevent further victimization.
