Increasing Participation at Salvation Army and Center of Hope in Muscle Shoals

As reported by Times Daily, the community is facing an increased demand for shelter and services due to frigid temperatures. Lt. Michelle Cook from the Salvation Army of the Shoals has noted a significant uptick in the number of individuals seeking refuge at the Center of Hope. Fortunately, the center has managed to accommodate this rise in visitors, thanks in large part to the support from local partners. Cook indicated that while the center is currently handling the influx, it is expected to reach its capacity as daytime temperatures rise and nighttime temperatures continue to drop.

Currently, the Center of Hope averages 27 guests each night, with a maximum capacity of 48 individuals. It is important to note that the Center serves as an overnight shelter, meaning that all visitors must leave each morning. In addition to those staying overnight, at least 20 additional individuals come to the shelter each evening to partake in the hot meals offered to guests. Due to the increased demand, requests for extra food boxes have also been made.

Cook emphasized that one of the most effective ways for community members to support those most impacted by the cold weather is by donating loose change into the iconic red kettles. So far, the Red Kettle Campaign has raised $30,210.76 for the Salvation Army of the Shoals, which represents just over 10% of its fundraising goal for this holiday season. The funds collected are vital for the Salvation Army, as they are utilized to provide essential services such as food assistance, utility support, and rental aid, among other critical programs.
