Individual Faces Charges for Inappropriately Dialing 911 for Non-Emergency Medical Assistance

A man from Lawrence County is now facing legal repercussions after allegedly abusing the emergency services system by dialing 911 without a legitimate medical necessity. On July 18, Ronald Holt made a call to emergency services, during which he expressed his desire to file charges against his mother and brother, accusing them of various criminal activities, including harassment and drug-related offenses. When informed that he needed to visit the courthouse to initiate a criminal summons, Holt became frustrated and abruptly ended the call.

Earlier that same day, Holt had been provided with information regarding county transportation services that could assist him in reaching the courthouse. He also referenced past injuries but declined the offer of emergency medical assistance, expressing concern about potential charges for the service.

Shortly after his initial call, Holt reached out to 911 again, this time requesting an ambulance under the pretense of needing a medical evaluation for a head injury. Upon the arrival of deputies and emergency medical services (EMS), Holt was discovered sitting on his porch, eating and displaying normal behavior. When informed that he would be transported for a medical assessment, he resisted, claiming that the hospital would not provide him with the help he needed. However, he eventually consented to accompany the EMS team.

Upon evaluation, officials concluded that Holt was not in a medical crisis and had misused the emergency services as a means of obtaining transportation. Consequently, a warrant was issued for his misuse of the 911 system. Holt was dropped off at an emergency room at 11:48 a.m., but he left the facility before 1:25 p.m., at which point law enforcement located him near the intersection of Pulaski Street and South Locust.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office has issued a reminder to the community that 911 should only be used for genuine emergencies, as misuse of this service constitutes a criminal offense.
