Lawrence County and Lawrenceburg Unveil New Pavilion at Veterans Park

On Thursday, July 10, local and county officials convened to commemorate the unveiling of a new pavilion at Veterans Park, a project that emerged from a collaborative effort between the Lawrence County government and the City of Lawrenceburg. The ceremony was spearheaded by County Executive David Morgan and Lawrenceburg Mayor Blake Lay, who were accompanied by County Commissioners, City Council members, various elected officials, and representatives from local veterans’ organizations.

This newly constructed pavilion represents a meaningful enhancement to Veterans Park, which was originally established in the aftermath of the catastrophic flood in 1998 that ravaged homes in the vicinity. Today, the park boasts a scenic walking path along Shoal Creek, designated RV sites, and a shaded area designed for community gatherings and activities honoring veterans.

The park is named in tribute to H.C. Edwards, Sr., who was the last surviving World War I veteran from Lawrence County. Adjacent to the pavilion, a memorial display pays homage to the service of other residents of Lawrence County who have served during times of war.

The realization of the pavilion has been a long-held aspiration for the local veteran community. James Deatherage, a representative of the Disabled American Veterans, played a pivotal role in this initiative, alongside County Commissioner and veteran Tim Clifton, who was instrumental in guiding the project to its successful completion.
