Lawrence County has received a significant boost in the form of a $487,200 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. This financial assistance is earmarked for enhancements to the county’s water system, which is crucial for providing safe and dependable access to water for both residents and local businesses.
Senator Page Walley underscored the importance of this investment, describing it as vital for the upkeep of robust and sustainable infrastructure. He pointed out that such improvements are essential not only for public health but also for fostering economic development within the county.
Governor Bill Lee also weighed in on the grant, stating that it will play a pivotal role in facilitating future economic growth. This funding is part of a larger initiative that benefits 44 communities across the state, showcasing a commitment to enhancing local resources.
Deputy Governor and TNECD Commissioner McWhorter emphasized the significance of the CDBG program, identifying it as a crucial mechanism for equipping Tennessee communities for upcoming development challenges. He expressed gratitude towards local leaders for their dedication and efforts in securing these funds.
The allocation of CDBG funds is determined by priorities established during local public meetings, and the program is financed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It aims to support a variety of projects, including improvements to water and sewer systems, health and safety initiatives, and other efforts designed to fortify rural communities throughout Tennessee.
