On Tuesday, September 23, the Lawrence County Commission convened for its regular session, during which a series of important decisions were made and leadership roles were filled. In a move to establish new leadership, Shane Eaton was appointed as the chair of the commission. Alongside him, Dave Ray was elected to serve as chair pro tempore, while Charlie Holt took on the role of county attorney.
The commissioners took significant steps in managing the county’s finances by approving several budget amendments. Additionally, they made key appointments, naming Brandi Williams as the director of accounts and budgets and Kelly Odom as the purchasing agent. Changes to the policies governing county employees were also discussed and approved.
In matters concerning public safety and community welfare, the commission supported a proposal to reduce the speed limit on Cemetery Road and agreed to close a section of Foster Road. They also allocated funds to support student travel for SkillsUSA, a program aimed at enhancing career and technical education. Furthermore, the commission decided to provide an additional $10,000 in funding to the Friends of Lawrence County Animals, reflecting their commitment to local animal welfare.
However, not all proposals were met with approval. A suggestion to implement a $12.50 court fee was rejected, and a substantial request for $800,000 to construct a practice gym at Lawrence County High School, along with two resolutions related to ambulance services, were sent back to committee for further consideration. This reflects the commission’s careful approach to fiscal responsibility and community needs.
