Lawrence County has taken significant steps to enhance its dedication to animal welfare by shifting the management of The Doggie House Animal Shelter from the City of Lawrenceburg to the Sheriff’s Department. This transition is part of the budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year and introduces a new Animal Control Officer along with a dedicated transport vehicle. Notably, the county’s financial support for the shelter will remain consistent throughout this change.
At the helm of operations is Shelter Director Ginger Morgan, who possesses extensive experience in animal welfare and nonprofit management. A native of Lawrence County, Morgan returned to her roots after spending years in Memphis, where she successfully led a pet-oriented nonprofit organization and played a pivotal role in raising substantial funds for cancer research that benefited both animals and humans alike.
Currently, The Doggie House is home to over 120 dogs, many of whom have been rescued from situations of hoarding or cruelty. In an effort to alleviate the overcrowding, the shelter is reducing adoption fees to just $20 throughout August as part of the nationwide “Clear the Shelters” initiative. Additionally, on designated “Black Dog Fridays,” individuals can adopt black and predominantly black dogs at no cost.
In recent years, the county has made remarkable advancements in animal welfare, including the construction of a new shelter, the initiation of a spay/neuter program, and the enhancement of animal control services. The ongoing success of these initiatives hinges on the support of the community through donations and adoptions.
