The Tennessean has identified its top four gyms across three distinct categories: the finest modern gyms, the best old-school gyms, and those with the most vibrant atmospheres. Notably, several schools from the Lawrence County region have made the list.
Among these, Lawrence County High School has earned recognition for having the best atmosphere. The Wildcats’ home games are typically sold out, creating an electric environment. Interestingly, the gym’s design stems from its original purpose as an indoor swimming pool, which contributes to its unique character. The school band enhances the experience by performing in full regalia, while the enthusiastic student section plays a crucial role in creating a challenging environment for visiting teams.
In the category of best modern gymnasiums, Loretto High School stands out. After spending 80 years in its previous location, affectionately known as “The Barn,” Loretto unveiled a new facility at the start of the 2023–2024 season. The transition required administrators to devise a plan that balanced modern upgrades with the cherished elements that made The Barn special. Among the trophies displayed, the first thing that catches the eye of visitors is Loretto’s 1958 TSSAA girls’ basketball championship title, a testament to the school’s rich athletic history.
Lastly, Summertown High School has been recognized for having one of the best old-school gymnasiums in the state. Its aesthetic appeal makes it a standout, even though it serves a relatively small student body of just 426. The gym’s design features dark wooden bleachers that are positioned close to the court, creating an intimate atmosphere where fans feel as though they are right above the action. The beams that stretch across the gym, a defining feature since its construction in 1953, add to its charm. However, due to its limited capacity, there are discussions about the possibility of constructing a new gym in the future, as the current space may no longer meet the needs of the growing school community.
