Progress continues on the establishment of Lawrence County’s inaugural solid waste convenience center, which is strategically situated off Busby Road near the Loretto Wastewater Treatment Facility. This initiative has been made possible thanks to the generous donation of a two-acre parcel of land from the City of Loretto to the county. Furthermore, the state Department of Environment & Conservation has contributed significantly by granting Lawrence County $187,000 to support the construction efforts.
To accommodate the varying schedules of residents, the center will operate on a part-time basis, ensuring that it is staffed and accessible during both morning and evening hours. While the facility will not accept tires, it will provide a range of services for the disposal of recyclables, household waste, and larger items such as beds and furniture. The design of the center includes two drive-through lanes, allowing for efficient disposal of the majority of recyclables and household trash.
In addition to the main disposal areas, a smaller building on the site will cater to the collection of batteries and used oil. The center is also equipped with designated spaces for other specialized materials, ensuring that residents have a convenient and responsible way to manage their waste. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing waste management services in Lawrence County.
