On Thursday, December 11, the Lawrenceburg City Council convened for a session that began with a heartfelt tribute to the late Lawrence County Attorney, Charlie Holt, who passed away the previous evening. Mayor Blake Lay led the council members in a moment of silence to honor Holt’s contributions to the community.
During the proceedings, Officer Keith Sandlin was recognized with a Life Saving Award for his heroic actions in rescuing an individual from the Highway 64 overpass on November 24. This commendation highlighted the bravery and dedication of local law enforcement in ensuring public safety.
The council took significant steps in updating local regulations by approving Ordinance No. 1447, which revises Title 17, Chapter 1 of the municipal code concerning refuse and trash disposal. This ordinance includes adjustments to service fees associated with the collection and removal of refuse, trash, garbage, and other materials. Additionally, Ordinance No. 1448 was passed, which involves the rezoning of a section of the John P. Sharp Family Trust property located on Flatwoods Road from R-1 (Large Lot Residential) to I-1 (Light Industrial), following a recommendation from the Planning Commission.
In addition to the ordinances, several resolutions were also approved during the meeting. The council entered into a contract with SportsGrass USA for the installation of turf at six baseball fields situated in and around Bobby Brewer Park. However, Councilman Darryl Watson expressed his dissent by voting against the contract, advocating for increased transparency in city operations. Furthermore, the council approved a separate agreement with Musco Lighting for the installation of lighting at the Babe Ruth and high school baseball fields, which followed extensive discussions among the members.
The council also finalized a lease agreement with Evers Construction Company, Inc. for property located at 306 Seventh Street (Parcel 078K E021.00). In addition, they passed the second amendment to the development agreement for the Good Hope Subdivision in collaboration with LUS and Calara.
As the meeting drew to a close, Councilman Robin Williams took the opportunity to deliver his annual Christmas message, bringing a festive spirit to the proceedings.
