Legal counsel representing former Columbia Fire Chief Ty Cobb is currently questioning the decision made by City Manager Tony Massey to deny Cobb a civil service hearing following his termination almost a month ago. Attorney John Mark Windle, who is representing Cobb, has raised concerns over Massey’s assertion that the fire chief is considered a department head and therefore not eligible for a civil service hearing. Windle argues that Cobb does not hold the position of a department head as claimed by Massey.
The written notice of termination was issued to Cobb on March 12th, marking the end of his tenure as the Fire Chief of Columbia. Cobb assumed the role in August 2017 after the passing of former Fire Chief Tommy Ray Hemphill. Notably, Cobb had worked alongside Hemphill for 19 years and was the city’s second choice for the position when Hemphill was appointed. Prior to his role as Fire Chief, Cobb also served as a Tennessee State Representative.
The dispute over the denial of a civil service hearing adds another layer to the aftermath of Cobb’s termination, with his legal counsel seeking clarity on the decision made by City Manager Massey. The unfolding situation highlights the complexities surrounding Cobb’s departure and the efforts being made to address the circumstances surrounding his dismissal.
