In a significant development for outdoor enthusiasts, leaders from the Limestone County Commission have announced the acquisition of a grant aimed at purchasing a 12-acre parcel of land situated along Sugar Creek. This area is set to be transformed into a dedicated launch site for kayaks and canoes, addressing a pressing need for safer access to the waterway.
Currently, individuals looking to enjoy kayaking or canoeing often find themselves parking along the highway, which poses serious safety risks. To mitigate these hazards, the county has plans to construct a parking facility on the newly acquired land, conveniently located off Cotton Belt Road. This will provide a safer alternative for visitors, allowing them to access the creek without obstructing traffic on the highway.
Previously, the land was privately owned, and while public access was permitted, concerns regarding safety and management led the owner to limit access. With the county’s acquisition of the property, they will take responsibility for maintaining the area and ensuring the safety of all visitors. The initiative is bolstered by a grant of $200,000, and officials anticipate that the project will be completed in time for public enjoyment by next summer.
