Matthew Byrd, a resident of Lawrence County, found himself back in circuit court this week, facing serious allegations of stalking and harassment. These charges, both categorized as Class A misdemeanors, could result in a maximum penalty of nearly a year in jail, specifically 11 months and 29 days for each offense.
The investigation into Byrd’s actions was conducted by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The incidents that led to these charges spanned a significant period, occurring between April 8, 2024, and November 7, 2024.
In a notable turn of events, Byrd opted to waive his right to a trial, instead choosing to enter a best interest plea agreement regarding both charges. As a result of this plea, he was sentenced to probation for a total of 11 months and 29 days for each count, with the terms to be served consecutively. Additionally, the court granted him a judicial diversion, which allows for the possibility of having the charges dismissed upon successful completion of his probation. Importantly, Byrd was also mandated to refrain from any contact with the victim and the victim’s family, ensuring their safety moving forward.
