Melvin “Mel” Henry Sutton, 70, of Killen, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Helen Keller Hospital. Mel was a dedicated millworker, but to those who knew him, he was much more. He deeply cherished his family and friends and took pride in his North Carolina roots while calling Alabama his beloved home.
Mel is survived by his loving wife Martha Cox Sutton; his son Heath (Robin) Sutton; his daughter Rachel (Mike) Aday; his stepsons Andrew (Ginda) Folkerts and Bobby Staggs; his brother David (Rosemary) Sutton; and his sister Carolyn Boyer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert C. and Beatrice Messer Sutton, and his son Travis Sutton. Mel also leaves behind grandchildren Eli Aday, Cole Sutton, Ethan Aday, Trace (Zoee) Barnett, Ashlyn (Jesse) Thompson, and Leo Folkerts.
After 42 years of dedicated service, Mel retired from Champion / International Paper, leaving behind cherished friendships. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 3 PM to 5 PM at Elkins East Chapel, with funeral services to follow at 5 PM in the chapel, officiated by Steve Milner.
