Mount Pleasant Resolves Major Water Leak, Saving 400,000 Gallons

In a recent announcement, officials from Mt. Pleasant, along with representatives from the Mt. Pleasant Gas and Water System and Columbia Power and Water Systems, revealed that they have successfully identified and repaired significant water leaks amounting to over 400,000 gallons per day. This effort was particularly crucial during the recent winter storm, when CPWS provided a substantial emergency water supply through the master meter connection to ensure the water system’s integrity while repairs were underway.

During the repair process, several issues within the distribution system were uncovered and addressed, leading to the restart and maintenance of the treatment facility. The diligent work by the Mount Pleasant Water team uncovered substantial leaks that had been contributing to the daily water loss. With the leaks now repaired, it is estimated that the system will save approximately 400,000 gallons of water each day.

The financial implications of these repairs are noteworthy. According to the news release, the current construction costs for expanding treatment capacity are estimated to be between $10 and $12 per gallon. Consequently, the successful repairs have resulted in an estimated savings of around $5 million in capital investment that would have been necessary for the growth of the treatment plant. This proactive approach not only enhances the efficiency of the water system but also represents a significant financial benefit for the community.
