New Guidelines for the REAL ID Act Set to Take Effect on May 7th

The REAL ID Act, enacted in 2005, established fundamental security standards for the production and issuance of identification cards and driver’s licenses. These regulations are designed to enhance the protection of personal identities. Furthermore, the Act prohibits federal agencies from accepting identification documents from states that do not comply with its established minimum criteria.

Starting on May 7, 2025, individuals will be required to present a REAL ID or an alternative federally recognized form of identification, such as a passport, in order to access specific federal buildings, military installations, nuclear power plants, or to board commercial flights within the United States. However, it is important to note that Tennessee residents are not obligated to obtain a REAL ID compliant license or identification card. For activities such as driving, voting, purchasing alcohol or tobacco, visiting the post office, seeking medical care, accessing federal courts, or applying for federal benefits like Social Security or veterans’ assistance, a REAL ID is not necessary.

The primary function of the REAL ID is to facilitate the boarding of domestic flights and to grant access to federal facilities or military bases that enforce this requirement.
