Observance of National Burn Awareness Week

In recognition of National Burn Awareness Week, which takes place from February 2nd to 8th, 2025, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is shining a light on the critical importance of preventing home fires and burn-related incidents. This year’s theme, “Burn Prevention Starts Where You Live,” highlights practical steps that individuals can take to reduce the likelihood of burns occurring in various areas of the home, including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and storage spaces.

Tennessee State Fire Marshal and Commissioner of the Department of Commerce & Insurance, Carter Lawrence, noted that winter poses the highest risk for home fires. He urged residents to prioritize safety while indoors to help avoid painful burns in the kitchen and to prevent potentially fatal fires in their homes. Lawrence emphasized the need for vigilance during this season, stating, “I want to encourage Tennesseans to focus on safety whenever they’re spending time indoors.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mike Bell, the Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention, also called on Tennesseans to take safety seriously during National Burn Awareness Week. He pointed out that this week serves as an excellent opportunity for families to review their home fire escape plans and to check that smoke alarms are functioning properly. For those who may need smoke alarms, Bell advised reaching out to local fire departments to inquire about participation in the “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” initiative or contacting the SFMO directly for assistance.
