On Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., Pope’s Tavern Museum, located at 203 Hermitage Drive in Florence, Alabama, will be the venue for an engaging presentation and leathercraft workshop. This event is part of a broader initiative by Archaeology at Pope’s Tavern, which aims to delve into the rich local history and archaeological significance of the area.
Leading the workshop will be Denise Anderson from Gathering Moss Studio in Huntsville. Participants can expect an insightful overview of leathercraft as it was practiced in the 1800s. The session will cover historical tanning methods, drawing comparisons to modern techniques, and will showcase various items that were commonly crafted during that era. Anderson, known for her expertise in traditional leatherworking, creates both functional and decorative pieces inspired by the natural world.
In addition to the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to witness ongoing archaeological efforts, as the team continues excavating Test Unit 7 following the session. This program is offered free of charge to the public and is made possible through the sponsorship of the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums, with additional support from the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area.
