In the early hours of the morning, at around 6:20 AM, emergency responders in Lawrence County sprang into action following reports of a vehicle being swept away from a bridge by floodwaters on Gieske Rd in the South East Fire District. The South East FD and a Sheriff’s Department sergeant, who happened to be in the vicinity, were the first to reach the scene. Navigating through a wooded area, they located the vehicle approximately 650 feet downstream from the bridge.
Upon arrival, they found one victim struggling to reach the shore. Despite having limited equipment, the responders attempted to assist the victim, only for the strong current to pull them underwater. Without hesitation, the Sheriff’s Department sergeant entered the water and managed to grab hold of the victim. With the help of two firefighters from the South East Fire Department, they were able to bring both individuals to safety.
Shortly after, additional swift water rescue personnel from LCFR arrived on the scene to aid in the rescue of the second victim. One team member swam to the victim from the bank, attaching a flotation device and safety ropes provided by other swift water personnel. Meanwhile, another member deployed safety rope lines and throw bags to assist in the rescue efforts.
As the situation unfolded, more swift water personnel from Lawrence County Fire Rescue and a five-person rescue team from Lawrenceburg Fire joined forces to ensure the safe rescue of the second victim. The collaborative efforts of all responders played a crucial role in successfully managing the challenging rescue operation.
