On January 16th, House Speaker Cameron Sexton, a Republican hailing from Crossville, announced the reappointment of State Representative Clay Doggett, also a Republican from Pulaski, to serve as the chairman of the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee for the 114th Tennessee General Assembly. This subcommittee, composed of nine members, operates under the House Judiciary Committee, which is tasked with overseeing a range of legal matters including court laws, judicial processes, civil procedures, and various aspects of criminal law such as offenses, penalties, and sentencing.
This marks the third time that Doggett will take on the role of chair for the Criminal Justice Subcommittee. With a background as a former law enforcement officer in Giles County and experience as a small business owner, Doggett has represented District 70 in the House of Representatives since 2019. In addition to his chairmanship, he will also participate in several other committees during the 114th General Assembly, including the Judiciary Committee, the Children and Family Affairs Subcommittee, the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, and the Private Acts Committee.
Expressing his commitment to public safety, Doggett stated, “One of the most important functions of government is to provide public safety to citizens.” He emphasized the efforts made by Republicans in the General Assembly to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of the criminal justice system. Doggett expressed gratitude to Speaker Sexton for his trust and looks forward to collaborating with his colleagues to ensure the safety of all Tennesseans.
The organizational meeting for the 114th General Assembly was officially convened on January 14th, during which Speaker Sexton appointed the various committees. Doggett’s district, House District 70, encompasses parts of Giles County as well as portions of Lawrence and Lincoln counties.
