The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI), along with the state Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, is issuing a reminder to all licensed beauty professionals regarding the completion of essential domestic violence training. This reminder comes in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of this initiative. In 2021, legislation was enacted by the Tennessee General Assembly mandating that all licensed beauty professionals undergo free training, which is available both online and in-person. This training is designed to equip professionals with the skills to identify signs of abuse, respond appropriately, and connect victims with vital resources.
Beauty professionals have been granted a four-year window, from 2022 to 2025, to fulfill this training requirement. It is crucial to note that failure to complete the training by the December 31, 2025 deadline will result in the invalidation of their licenses. To date, over 71,000 licensed beauty professionals have successfully completed the training, leaving fewer than 2,000 who still need to do so.
The Shear Haven Domestic Violence Training program specifically caters to salon owners and stylists, providing them with the necessary education to recognize the signs of domestic violence, engage in sensitive conversations with clients, and offer resources that may assist victims in finding safety. It is important to clarify that this training does not impose mandatory reporting obligations on the licensees.
