Tennesseans are gearing up for the holiday season earlier than ever, as indicated by a recent survey conducted by AAA. A significant portion of the population, specifically 54%, intends to embark on at least one overnight trip during the 2025 holiday period. The survey reveals that 73% of respondents plan to travel for Christmas, 63% for Thanksgiving, and 46% for New Year’s Eve. Notably, over a quarter of those surveyed, precisely 28%, expressed their intention to take more holiday trips compared to the previous year, while nearly half, at 45%, expect to maintain the same travel frequency as in 2024.
When it comes to Thanksgiving travel, the data shows that 64% of Tennesseans had already made their plans by the end of September. By the conclusion of October, it is anticipated that 91% of travel arrangements will be finalized, with only a small fraction, 6%, opting to wait until November to make their plans. The busiest travel days are projected to be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday. To avoid the crowds and maximize flight options, AAA suggests that travelers consider flying on the Sunday or Monday preceding Thanksgiving and returning on Saturday.
As for Christmas travel, many individuals are finalizing their itineraries primarily in October and November, with just 6% delaying until December. Most travelers aim to reach their destinations by Christmas Eve, and with Christmas Day falling on a Thursday this year, significant airport congestion is expected both the weekend prior and earlier in the week. To navigate the busy travel season effectively, AAA recommends booking flights early to secure nonstop options, opting for morning departures to minimize the chances of delays, allowing ample time between connecting flights, comparing different airlines and travel dates for better pricing, and utilizing travel rewards to help mitigate peak-season expenses.
Additionally, winter weather can pose challenges to travel plans, yet many Tennesseans appear to be unaware of the advantages of travel insurance. The survey indicates that only 29% of respondents feel well-informed about travel insurance, while 21% report having little to no knowledge of it. AAA encourages travelers to consider insurance as a protective measure against unforeseen delays and cancellations. In early November, AAA is set to unveil its Thanksgiving Travel Forecast, providing further insights into travel trends for the upcoming holiday season.
