The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has received the prestigious 2025 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Sustainable Performance, a testament to its exemplary commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. This accolade, bestowed by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, is one of nine awards presented this year across a variety of categories, highlighting the sanctuary’s significant contributions to ecological responsibility.
Renowned globally as a premier haven for elephants previously held in captivity, the sanctuary has expanded its influence by adopting innovative sustainable practices. Nestled in the picturesque hills of Hohenwald, it has emerged as a benchmark for environmental accountability within the realm of animal care.
Among its notable accomplishments, the sanctuary successfully diverted over 98% of its waste from landfills during 2023 and 2024, thanks to a robust composting initiative that processes more than 854,000 pounds of organic waste each year. This program not only eliminates the reliance on chemical fertilizers but also plays a vital role in land restoration efforts. Furthermore, in 2024, the sanctuary recovered over 134,000 pounds of recyclable materials, including challenging items, through a collaboration with TerraCycle.
In addition to waste management, the sanctuary has made significant strides in renewable energy. Solar panels installed across four facilities now provide 25% of the sanctuary’s annual electricity requirements. These solar systems, complemented by battery storage, have contributed to a reduction in carbon emissions and lowered energy expenses.
Water conservation initiatives at the sanctuary are equally ambitious. Currently, more than 90% of the water utilized comes from harvested rainwater, which is stored in cisterns with a capacity exceeding 40,000 gallons. The sanctuary employs sustainable landscaping and filtration systems to effectively manage stormwater runoff, thereby safeguarding the surrounding ecosystems.
Education on sustainability extends beyond the sanctuary itself. At the Elephant Discovery Center, visitors can engage with a variety of topics, including climate action, renewable energy, and biodiversity, fostering a greater understanding of environmental issues.
The recognition of the Elephant Sanctuary highlights the harmonious relationship between environmental stewardship and animal welfare, serving as an inspiring model for other organizations throughout Tennessee and beyond.
