In anticipation of the upcoming summer boating season, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is gearing up to promote safe boating practices during the 2025 National Safe Boating Week, scheduled from May 17 to May 23. This annual observance serves as the official kickoff for the Safe Boating Campaign, an international initiative aimed at fostering responsible boating habits to enhance the overall experience on the water. Each year, this week precedes Memorial Day weekend, a time when many boaters take to the waterways.
Throughout National Safe Boating Week and the entirety of the 2025 boating season, a coalition of boating organizations from both the United States and Canada will work together to advocate for safe boating practices. A significant focus of this effort is the importance of wearing life jackets, with the TWRA and its partners emphasizing the availability of modern, lightweight, and comfortable options. Lt. Col. Matt Majors, who oversees the Boating and Law Enforcement Division at TWRA, stated, “We want to encourage everyone to always boat responsibly.” He highlighted the diverse range of vessels that utilize the waterways, urging boaters to remain vigilant and to ensure that their plans do not include alcohol or drugs.
Boaters are encouraged to keep several essential safety tips in mind. These include taking a boating safety course, checking all equipment before heading out, creating a float plan, wearing a life jacket, utilizing an engine cut-off device, and staying informed about weather conditions. Additionally, maintaining awareness of one’s surroundings, traveling at safe speeds, avoiding boating under the influence, and keeping family and friends updated on one’s location are crucial for a safe outing.
As of 2025, there have been four reported incidents leading to five fatalities, one of which involved a paddle craft. In contrast, the previous year saw only one fatality during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. As the boating season approaches, it is imperative for all participants to prioritize safety and take the necessary precautions to ensure a fun and secure experience on the water.
