On Monday, authorities discovered a body in proximity to Joe Wheeler State Park, prompting an investigation by the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office. During their inquiry, officials located the driver’s license belonging to a missing student from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The Athens Police Department, along with rangers from Joe Wheeler State Park, initiated a search for a deceased individual within the park’s boundaries, with assistance from Lauderdale County investigators.
The vehicle belonging to David Stann, who had been reported missing to the Athens Police Department approximately three weeks prior, was located by park rangers in conjunction with Athens police. Following the discovery of the vehicle, law enforcement officers commenced a search of the surrounding wooded area. Their efforts led to the finding of human remains in a secluded part of the park shortly thereafter. Notably, Stann’s driver’s license was found among the clothing associated with the remains.
The remains have since been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy, as authorities work to determine the cause of death. The investigation continues as officials seek to uncover more details surrounding this tragic incident.
