The Lawrence County Historical Society has scheduled a meeting on Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 PM, to be held at the Southern Tennessee Higher Education Center. During this gathering, Curtis Peters will deliver a presentation focusing on the rich history of Railroads in Lawrence County. The discussion will delve into the inception of the earliest authorized railroad in 1850, known as the Nashville & Southern, and trace its evolution through the construction of the Nashville, Florence & Sheffield RR, later known as the L&N.
The impact of these railroads extended beyond mere transportation, as they played a pivotal role in the establishment of various communities along their routes, many of which continue to thrive today. Furthermore, the development of these railroads spurred the creation of new industries and facilitated modern passenger services from Columbia to Florence, Alabama. Notably, Lawrence County boasts a total of over 24 Railroad Depots that were constructed to support the railroad services in the area.
Attendees can look forward to an engaging presentation that will feature a comprehensive visual journey through Lawrence County’s railroad history. The use of a PowerPoint presentation will showcase a collection of over 100 historical photographs, offering a unique glimpse into the past and highlighting the significance of railroads in shaping the local landscape.
