County Executive David Morgan has taken a significant step by signing the documents that formally transfer ownership of the historic African-American school building in Lawrenceburg to the West Gaines Community Center. This decision follows a vote by the Lawrence County Commissioners during their meeting in September, where they agreed to hand over the property to the nonprofit organization.
In a further show of support, the commissioners made another pivotal decision in November, voting to allocate $45,000 to the West Gaines Community Center. This funding, which had originally been earmarked for a new roof for the building, will now assist the organization in its efforts to preserve and utilize the site. The school itself has a rich history, having provided education for first through eighth graders from its establishment in 1937 until it closed its doors in 1964.
