On the afternoon of November 5, 2024, a concerned citizen in Elkmont, Alabama, dialed 911 to report a violent incident unfolding in the area. Limestone County Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin confirmed that upon arrival, Elkmont Police Chief Donny Johns encountered a severely injured elderly couple. The victims were later identified as the parents of the suspect, Charlie Ray Cain Jr.
Following the incident, Cain fled on foot towards the Richard Martin Walking Trail. Approximately one mile from the scene, law enforcement officials, including Captain Caleb Durden and Chief Johns, located him hiding in the woods adjacent to the trail. He was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
Cain, a 55-year-old resident of Elkmont, faces multiple charges stemming from the attack on his parents. Authorities have established probable cause for several offenses, including Elder Abuse for the assault on his mother, which carries no bond, and Elder Abuse in the second degree for the assault on his father, also with no bond set. Additional charges include Domestic Violence in the third degree, Criminal Mischief in the third degree, and a violation of a domestic violence protection order.
In terms of bond amounts, Cain faces a $2,500 bond for attempting to elude law enforcement, a $500 bond for public intoxication, and a $1,000 bond for resisting arrest. He also has a DUI warrant with a bond set at $1,000. As a result of these actions, Cain is now facing both Class A and Class B felony charges under the Alabama Elders Act.
