Jo Ann Lanning Appleton, 93, of Gallatin, TN, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at her residence. She was born in Lawrence County, TN, and was a graduate of Martin Methodist College. Jo Ann retired from Metro Nashville Public Schools and was a devoted member of New Prospect United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Marvin and Flora Bedford Lanning; her husband, William D. Appleton; two brothers, Charles B. Lanning and George Lanning; and two sisters, Nancy Crowder and Peggy Dean.
Jo Ann is survived by her son, Steve Appleton (Terri) of Gallatin, TN; grandson, Joshua Appleton (Ashlee) of Springfield, TN; great-grandchildren, Emma, Ellie, and Walker; sisters, Pat Morgan of Lawrenceburg, TN, Lillian Henson of KY, Frances Rayfield of Lawrenceburg, TN; and brother, Bob Lanning of Lawrenceburg, TN.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 9, 2025, with Billy Beal officiating. Interment will follow at Mimosa Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Lawrence County Public Library.
