In a recent development, the Lawrenceburg City Council has enacted an ordinance that reduces the speed limit on US 43, also known as South Locust Avenue, to 45 miles per hour. This change will take effect starting from the current 45 mph sign and extend all the way to the southern city limits. The decision was reached with unanimous support from the council members.
Councilman Aaron Story emphasized the importance of this amendment, noting that the rising number of accidents along this highway segment has raised significant concerns within the community. To address these issues, the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Region 3 Traffic Office conducted a comprehensive analysis of crash statistics spanning from December 2020 to December 2023. This thorough traffic study, which was completed in January 2024, revealed that speed was a contributing factor in many of the 28 recorded accidents, which unfortunately included several injuries and one tragic fatality.
In light of these findings, the Traffic Office recommended that the speed limit on US 43 be set at 45 mph, along with enhancements to warning signage aimed at improving safety for all road users. The council’s decision reflects a proactive approach to addressing traffic safety concerns in the area.
