Dr. Mai Hogan Kelton, a beloved educator, musician, and devoted mother, passed away on January 24, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. She was born on January 2, 1929, in Dover, Tennessee, to Reverend Alexander Rosson Hogan and Rosa Lee Albright Hogan. Dr. Kelton’s passion for music and education led her to a distinguished career as a music teacher and church musician. She was a dedicated member of various professional organizations and was deeply involved in church activities throughout her life.
After completing her doctoral studies, Dr. Kelton married Dr. Allen Kelton and devoted herself to her family. She was a loving mother to her children, Mary Katherine Kelton and John Allen Kelton, and took great pride in sharing her passion for music with them. Her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren, Ava, Jillian, and Scarlett Kelton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dr. Kelton’s commitment to music and church activities brought her great joy and fulfillment. She served as an organist and choir director in churches of various denominations in Tennessee, Alabama, and Iowa. Her talent as a singer was also recognized, and she appeared as an alto soloist with several choirs and orchestras.
A memorial service to honor Dr. Kelton’s life and legacy will be held at a later date, and she will be laid to rest in the Fall River, Tennessee Cemetery. The Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home is handling all final arrangements.
Dr. Mai Hogan Kelton will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the communities she touched throughout her life. Her dedication to music, education, and church activities has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
