On the evening of May 23rd, at precisely 5:34 PM, units from the Maury County Fire Department were dispatched to the boat ramp at Chickasaw Park to conduct a water rescue operation. The situation involved an adult male who has autism and had been swept away by the current after entering the water. Observing the distress of the individual, two courageous bystanders jumped into the river in an attempt to assist him. However, as they all struggled against the current, they quickly vanished from the sight of the caller who had alerted emergency services.
Upon the arrival of the Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team and the Maury County Sheriff’s Department, responders were relieved to find that all three individuals had made it safely to the riverbank. They were located beneath a rocky cliff, several hundred yards downstream from where the incident began. A boat was deployed to facilitate the safe recovery of the three individuals, who were unharmed despite the harrowing experience. The quick actions of the two bystanders were instrumental in ensuring the safety of the man in distress.
In light of this incident, the Maury County Fire Department is taking the opportunity to remind all boaters, kayakers, and swimmers to prioritize safety by wearing Coast Guard-approved life jackets while engaging in water activities this summer. Additionally, Maury County 911 received commendation for their exemplary response to this emergency call, highlighting the effectiveness of their operations in critical situations.
